Boy, this sounds like some leaders I know. In my mind, they're dictators.
I've learned by experience what I do not want in a church leader, a pastor. And the Bible already told me who I should not have as a pastor. Who should not be a pastor and who should.
Paul knew there would be some who would
be short fused- pushy, bullying, and money hungry. And he said they are not up for the position of leadership!
It's important that a church leader, responsible for the affairs in God's house, be looked up to-not pushy, not short-tempered, not a drunk, not a bully, not money-hungry. (Titus 1:7 MSG)
So how do these people get into this position? Do they become like this AFTER they've been put in? I think some of it is because being in an important position goes to their head. They get a little proud. The taste of bringing in all that $ goes to their heart. They get a little money hungry!
In certain denominations the leaders drink, and they drink quite a bit! I remember going to a funeral at a beautiful church where inside it was filled with an aroma of incense and there seemed to be an aura of spirituality, of somber respect for the Lord.
Afterwards we went downstairs to eat, and everyone was eating, drinking and smoking...I was shocked, even the leaders were doing it. Maybe some congregations think this is just ok...but I was disturbed!
Shouldn't a leader be the same upstairs as he is downstairs? Shouldn't we all? This is why Paul is telling you to watch who you put in as your leaders. They may be leaders, but lead you down the wrong road!
Paul had a huge responsibility in teaching and raising up churches, but God used him to do it and he did it! We need to follow his example! What is YOUR pastor like?
He must welcome people, be helpful, wise, fair, reverent, have a good grip on himself, and have a good grip on the Message, knowing how to use the truth to either spur people on in knowledge or stop them in their tracks if they oppose it. (Titus 1:8, 9 MSG)
No one is perfect, including leaders. I personally like to see leaders that don't claim to be perfect, but claim to be trying hard to be what God calls them to be! Humble and real! I think Paul would approve of that. And God!
