Here John the Baptist is telling people who thought that they were spiritually ok, that they were sinners. A lot of people believed him and were baptized. The weird clothes and the weird food he ate, is to make a point. John the Baptist isn't like all of the other "religious" people of the day who were some of the wealthiest people around. (they had gotten rich by taking advantage of the people.) John was poor and was showing people that there was a new way coming.

Then John the Baptist tells people that the Savior is coming and that he will be so great that John isn't even worthy to put his shoes on.
