What if our leaders in government...

I've never been very vocal publicly on government and leadership in government. I'll be honest and say it is out of my comfort zone and I have far more to learn and listen to before I open my mouth. And I don't want to become just another citizen who voices a selfish opinion lacking broad understanding of more than just one or two issues.

However, lately I've been thinking more and more about this. I don't know if God is nudging me to become more involved or what. Still lots to pray about.

With that in mind, this post might be my first or one of my first attempts at influencing leaders in government or expressing my opinion. I hope my opinion is not narrow and I am open to feedback and want to learn and listen.

So, here's my first political declaration... Today, I am announcing that I will be running for President of the United States.

(Okay...just kidding!)

But here's a thought based on Nehemiah 5.

What if our leaders in government practiced the leadership principles and behavior of Nehemiah? More specifically, what if they did not take a salary or benefits or perks that exceed the average American? Yeah, I know...pretty radical idea huh?

Nehemiah was one of the greatest governmental leaders of all time. And here, he is clear that he would not accept the food or provisions the government said he was qualified for. He made sure his standard of living did not put a burden on those he was leading. In addition to that, he used what was available to him personally to host and feed (for free) other people. He didn't turn the receipts in to be reimbursed. He paid for it.

In 2008, the median income per American was just over $52,000. I am that American. I make slightly more than the 2008 median. Sandy & I manage our money with the "10-10-80" approach. We tithe 10%, save 10%, and live on 80%. (Actually, it's more like "15-10-75" for us.) I only say this to give context to my thought.

What if our leaders in government would make a commitment to live with the salary and standard of living of the average American? Again, I know this is a really crazy and wild thought and reasons (or "excuses") would be given as to why this wouldn't work or be good for our communities and country.

But what if? What message would it send? Maybe it wouldn't have an impact on the economical side of government. But what impact would it do for the morale and psychological aspect of America?

What if they shopped at Target, Walmart? What if they shopped online with Amazon? What if they drove a 2005 Ford?

What if?

Read Nehemiah. Be Nehemiah. It can be done. The question is do you WANT it to be done? Do you want to go through the hard decisions and changes it would bring?
