What's Your Purpose?

Colossians 1

Colossians 1:24-25 24 I want you to know how glad I am that it’s me sitting here in this jail and not you. There’s a lot of suffering to be entered into in this world—the kind of suffering Christ takes on. I welcome the chance to take my share in the church’s part of that suffering. 25 When I became a servant in this church, I experienced this suffering as a sheer gift, God’s way of helping me serve you, laying out the whole truth.

Observation - I think the attitude of Paul in this opening chapter of Colossians is amazing. How many of us could say, "I'm glad it's me sitting here in this jail and not you"? Paul sees it as a privilege rather than a burden to suffering for Christ and His church. How do you get an attitude like that? I believe the key is in verse 1 - "I, Paul, have been sent on special assignment by Christ as part of God’s master plan." Having purpose and mission makes all the difference in attitude. Paul saw his life and the things that happened to him in this life as a part of something bigger than himself.

Application - What difference would it make if we saw what we do as part of a special assignment from Christ, a part of God's master plan? Do you just go to work or do you go knowing you have a special assignment from God to be the hands, feet and heart of Jesus to others? Do you just go to school or do you go know that you could make a difference by being a good friend to someone who is hurting? Do you just "do life" or do you live it with a purpose? You are on special assignment from God - go and be a part of His Master Plan.

Prayer - God, help me see my special assignment more clearly.
