God's Deal with Abraham
There seems to be some confusion from folks on this passage.
This method of cutting animals in half and walking between them was a common way of sealing a contract back in the day (way back in the day.)
Abraham and God march through the pieces to seal the covenant (God as the smoking furnace and blazing torch).
I'm not a Christian, but if I were I might look at this passage in a couple of ways:
1. It shows how God makes a covenant with us through sacrifice. In the Christian sense that would be the sacrifice of Jesus.
2. I like the image of Abraham driving the birds off the carcasses, as a metaphor for driving away those who would pick at our faith in God.
