The word "therefore" in v. 38 is cleraly meant to point us to the truth about what it was that prompted the "groaning im himself" that is recorded here. The sequence of events is what reveals that it was the statements of "the Jews" in verses 36 & 37 that provoked Jesus' reaction in verse 38.
