I know many times in my lifetime I've heard the expression "ignorance is bliss". After weighing this saying against the true word of God, I know it's not something that one should live by. Ignorance is defined as "the lack of knowledge or information". And the dictionary describes bliss as "perfect happiness, great joy". How can not knowing something lead to perfect happiness or great joy? God says in Hosea 4:6, that His people are destroyed for the lack of knowledge. Wow...how can one find joy in something that ultimately destroys them?
Proverbs has many gems on wisdom and knowledge. Proverbs 4:7 explains how wisdom is the principal thing. Wisdom protects and guards us and we shouldn't turn our back on it (Proverbs 4:6). God instructs us in Proverbs 4:13 to take hold of His instructions and not to let them go because they are the key to life.
Proverbs 1:29-31, paints a vivid picture of what happens to one who rejects knowledge. The passage describes people who hated knowledge and chose not to fear the Lord. They rejected advice and paid no attention when they were corrected. As a result, they had to eat the bitter fruit of living their own way and choke on their own schemes. Verse 32 says that "fools are destroyed by their own complacency" (Complacency = a feeling of smug or uncritical satisfaction with oneself or one's achievements). They are destroyed because they are so confident in themselves and do not look to God for wisdom. As believers, we are rewarded by following verse 33, which says all those who listen to God's wisdom will live in peace and will not be troubled by the fear of harm.
As believers we are to hold ourselves to accountable God. God's word reveals everything that we need to know about Him and how to live in this life. We should not reject that or feel confident in our own strength. Continue to grow in God's wisdom and remember that ignorance is not bliss.
