Washing with the Word
I am still learning what this verse means, but reading it today something struck me: the way Jesus loved us is this: "While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." (Rom.5:8). He gave of Himself and loved us sacrificially before we were even able to receive His Word.
This passage seems to indicate that we (husbands) are to lead our wives spiritually, including through sharing spiritual truth (the Word) with them. However it is clear that we will not be very effective in this unless we are living out the Word ourselves first, particularly with regard to sacrificial love toward our wives.
