Maybe a different take

part of a study that we are doing at church. But I'm going to attempt to flesh out a different perspective for this story. In relation to the current debate over health care reform let's look at the Priest and the Levite. In the Jewish culture you are unclean if you touch blood or a dead body and this is the reason they both avoid the injured man. They couldn't be inconvienced by the posibbility of being unclean and unable to meet their obligations at the temple. We have this same problem with insurance companies in our present day, they can't be inconvienced with providing coverage for people if it cuts into their profits. It would be lovely if more people would act like the good Samaritan, but why don't we change the culture and policy that causes people to avoid helping. If we change the policies so that the priest is not unclean then he is free to help. In the same way let's free up doctors to work with patients without worrying about insurance and call insurance companies to be accountable for the services they provide. Part of Jesus' message was that the system in place was flawed and that the focus was in the wrong place. We have the opportunity to act as the hands of Jesus and should help change the culture and focus of our energies toward policies that benefit those in need.
