What is our response to the weak?

Blessed are those who have regard for the weak... Psalm 41:1a

This is a curious verse tucked away in this amazing psalm. What does it mean? Why are those who "regard the weak" blessed?

1) Who are the weak? Does it mean those who are physically, economically, emotionally, socially weak? All of the above and more. The key essence of being weak is that there is a lack of something. They are in need of aid from others.

2) What is regard for the weak? The word used here is שׂכלśâkal - it not only implies people recognising the "lack" in people but there is action attached to this word, they do something about it. For God's heart is a heart of provision and of lifting up. And when His children begin to do the same, it delights Him. It reminds me of the story of the "Good Samaritan" (Lk 10:25-37) where action is always attached to our claims of "love".

Have you met people who regard the weak? A life of sacrifice, of love and of other-centredness. There is a certain glow and attraction about their life.

Furthermore, something amazing happens when all of us begins to live this out in our communities. When we are on the watch out for the areas of lack and actually step in to provide for one another. We then become the true body of Christ. A body that is fully functioning and healthy is one where every part of the body functions as they were created and is integrated in a network of inter-dependence. Where everyone is supported and nourished.

So, do you see the weak God has placed around you? Those who are lacking and in need of aid? What are you doing about it? Are you regarding the weak?
