Grace is a teacher
God's goodness and kindness lead to repentance. The more we understand the grace of God - his all surpassing love for us and his redemptive work through Jesus Christ, despite of who we are - the more the bondage of sin will be broken.
It's not the threat of punishment, hellfire and brimstone that makes us change. It might influence our behaviour for a while, but in the end these things will only cause us to fight, flee or freeze.
Goodness and kindness on the other hand are most dangerous tools - look what they did to Zacheus, for example. They will soften hearts and make room for relationship. Grace teaches us to move instead of freezing, to come closer instead of fleeing and to love instead of fighting.
