This text is both troubling and challenging. Troubling in that so many people seem to think that God instantly answers prayer. Troubling because I often ask for the wrong things, not for wisdom.
Often times, I see my needs as urgent. Now there are certainly times when that is the case, but most of the time it isn't a pressing thing.
So what should I say in my prayers?
Rote poems? Childhood rhymes? Crisis 911 calls? Really what is so urgent?
I don't think I've overlooked what is in this passage over the years, but I have often forgot what was said. Patience. Persistence. Never giving up.
The fact is, my mom always told me I mumbled allot as a kid. But, at least I did it often. Usually begging for an apple or a extra helping of vegetable for the dinner plate? No, it was usually something based on selfish desires. Occasionally, I got what I asked for. Most often though, no.
As an adult, I understand now. But, as a child, nope. Didn't get it.
Bottom line, our lives are more saturated with advertising and consumerism thinking than in first century Palestine when these words were spoken. We live in a narcissistic world and forget about asking for the true gifts. God is speedy in answering prayer, it is not that he doesn't want to do it quickly. But, read the text. WE ask for the wrong things (see James 4:3).
