Watch closely?
Why would the people be instructed to watch closely? There was nothing happening during that era that would distract them from doing so. Maybe it was the mundane that they were being challenged to look beyond... When Jesus appeared, it was a time in history when the entire civilized world was at peace. Even though there was peace among the people, it may be that there was spiritual unrest. The last God-sent prophet was Malachi and that happened 400 years prior. Did God choose this time in history - peaceful, harmonious, uneventful - so that Jesus' appearing would be the center of attention? I don't want life to become so mundane that I forget to expect the unexpected pleasures of Jesus' appearing in my daily routine!
