The Builder's Psalm
Similar today, in Biblical times the builder or architect of a famous building was to remembered by others ...especially if the building was a sacred shrine.
If you go back and read the first verses of the previous seven Psalms, starting at Psalm 120 - they run like this:I cried out to him, and he answered my prayer."
Psalm 121: "I look up to the mountains—does my help come from there?"Psalm 122: "I was glad when they said to me,
“Let us go to the house of the LORD.”
Psalm 123:" I lift my eyes to you, O God, enthroned in heaven."
Psalm 124:"What if the LORD had not been on our side?"
Psalm 125: "Those who trust in the LORD are as secure as Mount Zion; they will not be defeated but will endure forever."
Psalm 126: " When the LORD brought back his exiles to Jerusalem, it was like a dream!"
Psalm 127: "Unless the LORD builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted. Unless the LORD protects a city, guarding it with sentries will do no good."
The LORD and the LORD alone is lifted up at the beginning of each of these songs of ascents as the only means of life's successes. God's blessing on His people is the one great necessity and the privilege is emphasized.
I am taught here that builders of houses, magnificent shrines, great architectural feats, cities, systems, fortunes, empires and churches all labor in vain without the Lord; but under His divine favor they enjoy success. My own life needs to be built upon the same Foundation. "Therefore, this is what the Sovereign LORD says: "Look! I am placing a foundation stone in Jerusalem, a firm and tested stone. It is a precious cornerstone that is safe to build on. Whoever believes need never be shaken." Isaiah 28:16
In Hebrew, sons are called "builders"and are given the purpose to 'build' up families under the same divine blessing, to the great honor and happiness of their parents and the LORD.
It is THE BUILDER'S PSALM. Every house is built by some man; but what God builds endures all things, and in the that - only unto God be all praise.
