Prodigal Son
Jesus' is responding to the Pharisees and Scribes with three stories. Most focus on the prodigal son. Now this is an important aspect; however, this is not the point. The point of these three sections are spoken by Jesus to show the Scribes and Pharisees religious hearts. Full of arrogance, self-righteousness and pride.
Jesus is dinning with tax collectors and sinners and the scribes and Pharisees are judging Jesus for doing so. So Jesus responds with 3 stories.
1.) the lost sheep, the shepherd finds this lost sheep, throws a party and heaven rejoices because the lost sheep is found.
2.) the lost coin. The woman finds her lost coin and throws a party and the Angela of God rejoice when one sinner repents.
3.) the lost son. The son leaves his father and spends all he has. Then repents and returns to his father. Who throws a party and rejoices that his son was dead and is now alive, was lost and is now found.
If doesn't end there. The older brother comes home to this party and gets all self righteous and full of pride is. Upset because he thinks he deserves a party more than his younger brother who he believes is a loser and a disgrace to the family.
This is EXACTLY what the scribes and Pharisees believed. They believed they were living for God and deserved to be recognized by this "perceived God's Son" and felt disrespected because "God's Son" was dining with tax collectors and sinners.
Ultimately this section is not about the prodigal son; rather, Jesus is point out the evil in the Pharisees/Scribes heart.
The scribes/Pharisees = the older brother (Bitter Brother)
The tax collectors and sinners = the younger brother.
Jesus is spending time with those who need I repent not those who believe the don't believe they need to repent.
