How to lose your life

Seriously, it doesn't get any more heavy than this. Especially for people living in a kind of society where we don't really have to worry about persecution. In a way, interpreting this verse must have been much easier in the first few centuries. But now I always struggle with how to lose my life. The simple answer is to live a life in complete submission and obedience to Christ. That's a good Bible college answer. However, it's tough when you realize that God isn't really into micromanaging our lives, and that He leads us to have to make decisions on our own (at least that's what He does in my opinion). So then is it okay that I indulge some in things that aren't really bad, but not totally Christ centered?

For example, I have an iPhone that I love. I use it for so much and it has helped me become more efficient and better connected. However, it's certainly not something that I need. Plus, I did drop $200 on it, which could have gone to something perhaps more important. So in this case, am I not really losing my life? Do I need to sacrifice everything a la Rich Young Ruler style, or can I still enjoy some of the things of this life and live wholly submitted to Christ?
