God's righteousness - a fearsome attribute

Like your name, O God, your praise reaches to the ends of the earth;

your right hand is filled with righteousness. Ps 48:10

Just pondering upon this attribute of God today - His righteousness. Firstly, the right hand is actually the instrument of action. It is the dominant way in which he acts. So, one of God's dominant attributes is His righteousness. He is a God of justice.

In dialoguing with people who don't know Jesus yet, a frequent question is brought up. Why does God not step into the world today to correct the wrongs we see all around us? Why? I believe that it is actually because of His mercy and grace. For when He steps in as the Righteous Judge, who will be able to stand before Him? If He comes to correct the wrongs, who is to say that we will not be swept away in His judgments too? We, who think we are also righteous and "good" will shrink back in shame when the perfect holiness of God is revealed.

A famous preacher once reminded me recently... our biggest "problem" is actually that God is GOOD. He is righteous. He is a God that will exact justice. Who can stand before Him?

Thankfully, God's right hand also imputes His Son's righteousness onto those who will truly seek after Him. Not just as people wanting to escape His righteous judgments but as people who love His Son, Jesus.
