coming like a thief
Sardis already historically sacked by Persians when they were careless in their city defenses. When Persians surrounded the city, Sardis was so cocky that they didn't even guard the city walls. No one could figure out how to get up. One soldier dropped his helmet and Persian soldier saw how he retrieved it and then followed soldier up path to city walls and figured out how to attack city. They penetrated and took the city while Sardis slept.
