Gentleness
Philippians 4:5 NKJV
5 Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand.

Paul writes so many wonderful statements throughout this letter to the church. This verse is not one i've ever really recognized as that. Today as i read it, GENTLENESS jumped up and slapped me (ironic, I know).
At first reading it, youd think Paul used the wrong word. Generosity, faith, courage, passion, zeal, even joy seem like they would be suited to fill that slot. But gentleness?
I've never said, "You know, today i just want to be gentle." Not a typical thing to say, certainly not something talked about at the local hunting lodge. But gentleness is a Godly trait, and according to the apostle here, a trait that should be on display in a way that people catch it.
Gentleness for me has more to do with my reaction than an action i initiate. For instance, when my kids do something wrong, and my reaction is under control, gentleness is on display. It isnt that my actions are void of authority, they are done under control and with a gentleness. As a husband, choosing not to be argumentative reveals gentleness of spirit. Gentleness flies in the face of arrogance, anger, and selfishness. Living as a gentle man, who embodies authority, confidence, & faith is a man who point people to Gods grace and goodness. Thats the man I want to be.
Father, thanks for your patience with me as i strive to grow more like you today. AMEN.
