Taking it Too Far
"Not only do they continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them."
My youth group has really expressed this idea of being in the world but not of it. Overall it's a great concept. To show light to others, you need to be around them, but at the same time, you don't want to be doing the bad things they are doing. This verse clearly reminds us that even if we aren't doing such things that deserve death, we should not support and approve of those who do. This is pretty hard I think. Especially if your going to be in the world but not of it. When is being around the drinking, drugs, gossip, etc. okay and when is it not? There has to be a balance between being in the world and showing God's light but not supporting the sin. If you around these thing, but not doing them, it still might indicate to people that you approve. I think as Christians we have to be very clear with people that just because we around something, even if we aren't doing it, doesn't mean we think it is right or okay. We shouldn't have the attitude with our non-Christian friends that "hey, they can do what they want, as long as I don't." They should know that we don't like those things. We are not to approve of sinners, as hard as it may be, especially when they are people we love.
