Giants On Earth
These verses have been the source of some theological controversy. Some teach that the "sons of God" were angels (fallen ones, I presume) who married human women and produced a race of giants. But there are some problems with this.
First, Jesus said that angels don't marry. Second, there's not a single other scripture that indicates anything like this ever happened anywhere else. And third, it just sounds absurd.
I think a more plain and simple understanding is that the "sons of God" were Seth's lineage, marrying with the "daughters of men" who were of Cain's lineage. So the separated, godly line of Seth compromised in becoming "unequally yoked" with rebels, producing a generation of people who were filled with pride ("men of renown") and who had little respect for the authority or prominence of God.
