Earlier in this passage some of the crowd that Jesus miraculously fed the day before have found him to continue learning from him. They ask Jesus if he will give them a sign that he was sent from God just as Moses had the sign of manna from heaven. Even as Jesus starts to answer their question, some of the people start to become offended at his answer. Jesus then takes it a step further and points out that the manna was imperfect in that the people got hungry again and eventually died natural deaths, but he’s the living bread that brings eternal life. Jesus is God’s provision for them just as the manna was for those in the desert. Even though we have more information available to us than his original audience had, it doesn’t make the message easier to accept. Jesus is God’s complete provision for us as well. Let us humbly receive the grace he offers in the sacrifice and salvation of Jesus.
