I love how new questions come to mind every time you read something even as "dull" as genealogy. Who is Seir? The genealogy covers Abraham's other sons and then Esau's sons and then Seir. So, I wonder if I had missed Seir. Well, Seir is not there!
Then, I backed up and looked up Seir, which is mentioned several times in Genesis. It was the name of the hill country in Edom where Esau settled, which explains why the verses go from Esau's descendant's to those of Seir. The first mention of a man named Seir was in Genesis 36:20 in the genealogy listed there. The only extra information we get here is that Seir was a Horite.
Why is he mentioned here? Esau's wife married Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah, the son of Seir. So, basically, this section presents Esau's in-laws.
