Technically, Jonathan was guilty. But the people did not want him to die, even though that was the appropriate penalty for his sin. Instead, they ransomed him, maintaining both justice and life. This same concept applies to us and our sin. Our sin earned us nothing but death. But Jesus ransomed us on the cross in order to maintain both justice and life.
