Jesus says he is about to do something new: the new covenant of his blood. But the old traditions cannot contain the new covenant. The old traditions do not fulfil the new covenant. Rather, the new covenant of Christ's blood fulfils the old traditions and surpasses them. Jesus does not outright condemn the traditions, but he does place them "in the back seat" with respect to the new covenant of grace.
