The God who pursues (by Musings of a Pilgrim)
You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand. Ps. 16:11
God is the one that takes the initiative here. It is not about man seeking the path of life from God. For man was steeped in sin and frankly, I would not even want to follow Jesus if He had not revealed Himself to me. It was whilst we were still sinners that Christ died for us. This is a wonderful picture of a God who pursues us. God came for us. He is the Shepherd seeking after the one lost sheep. It is Jesus who knocks at the door of our hearts.
God is the one that has good towards us. He leads us down the path of salvation. One that leads us out of darkness into His marvellous light (1 Pet. 2:9). Yes, this gate is small and the path is narrow (Mt. 7:14). Yes, this road may lead us down hardships that we would not otherwise face if we declared our allegiance to Jesus (Jn 16:33).
BUT, it is a path full of life. Jesus says I came so that you may have life, and life to the fullest (Jn. 10:10). It is a path filled with joy! Why? Because we can actually BE in the presence of God!!! What greater privilege and satisfaction than to be in the house of the Lord. Better is one day in the house of the Lord than a thousand days elsewhere (Ps. 84:10). Finally there is a world beyond this world which God is preparing for those who love Him. No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him (1 Cor. 2:9).
Although God is the one that pursues us, we must be the ones that will respond. I don't know where you are in your journey of life today but my prayer for you is that you will see the God that is pursuing you and His small still voice saying "My dearest child, come home".
