It is unfortunate that for many children and adults, the joy of this Christmas will be determined by what they have or don't have under the tree. Some children, especially in America, will be very sad and even angry if they wake up on December 25 and discover that they didn't receive what they requested. Some adults will be sad and choose to self medicate because they couldn't provide that special gift for a child or loved one. Though my heart goes out to so many who are challenged because we are living in challenging times financially, I pray that we can all find a greater reason to rejoice than a present.
In Luke 1:39-45, Elizabeth gives us a great example of when and why we can rejoice. Mary, Elizabeth's cousin, visited her. "At the sound of her greeting, Elizabeth's child leaped within her, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit". The presence of Jesus entering her house in the womb of his mother was reason to rejoice. John the Baptist, while he was still in the womb knew to leap for joy. Why? Jesus was present. Elizabeth was blessed and joy filled. Why? Jesus was present.
Rejoice this season because Jesus is present in your life. Rejoice because God has favored us with the privilege of living daily in connection and communion with Jesus (John 15:5-8). How should we rejoice? Leap for joy today. His presence in our lives is a big deal and we should rejoice about it.
Today I choose to leap for joy because of Jesus.
