One day several years ago, I was in a developing country in West Africa. We saw some women carrying firewood on their heads and I wanted to take a picture. After we were done I gave the women some money that amounted to about a day's wage. About the time we were driving away, our host remarked that they will go to the market and buy fish for their dinner.
Fish in this bible text makes us see that this was far more than a snack to these people. They ate as much as they wanted!
Look what is happening. The people enjoy the luxury of a grand meal and a power struggle ensues. They want to make him king.
Jesus neatly summarizes what this meal really meant, to both rich and poor. He is the bread of life.
You and me don't really feel hungry most of the time. We are an affluent people. But we do need to stop and give thanks, and also to see our spiritual poverty.
