conversations with God

I wonder what these talks with God were like. Did David pray and God audibly respond? Or was it more like a conversation with another person, with "give and take"? If it was like today, perhaps the Holy Spirit was dwelling in David and they talked.
The text demonstrates a clear line of communication between David and God. Can we have this today? Do we take advantage of our ability to communicate with God today? After all, we have "all access" passes (see Hebrews 4:16; 6:19 and Luke 23:45) today!
