How do you really know God? (by Musings of a Pilgrim)
"I will praise God's name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving" (Ps. 69:30).
I am continuing the theme of praising God. In this verse, we see the psalmist praising God's name. A name declares who the person is. So as we say God's name, we are bringing Him to our mind - who He is and what He has done.
Who is God to you? Father? Creator? King of Kings? God? Lord? Friend? Redeemer? Slot machine for getting what we want? Old man in the sky? Where do we get to know God today? It is through His Words. "May my cry come before you Lord; give me understanding according to your word". (Ps. 119:169) If we don't have a clear picture of who God is, there is no impetus to praise Him.
I believe one of the main reasons for our lack of desire to be with God is that we just don't know who He is. Why? Because very few of us spend the time to actually know Him - through His Word and prayer. But can you see how it is such a vicious cycle. When we don't desire to know Him, we don't read His Words to us. When we don't read His Words, we don't desire to know Him. And so it spirals around and around.
So, how do we break this vicious cycle? We must determine today to learn to handle the Word of God well. Pray that the Holy Spirit come to be our great teacher as we open up His Words. Slowly but surely as you begin to see God in His Words, your desires for Him will grow.
