David is faced three times with different types of criticism from different people. The first time David is confronted is from his Brother Eliab (v. 28) for what Eliab assumed David's motives were for being present at the battle. David countered this criticism by asking what he did and turning to someone else instead of trying to talk this through with his brother (v. 30)
The second time David was criticized was from Saul (v. 33, 34). This doesn't seem to be as severe as the criticism that he faced from Eliab. Saul told David that there was no way that he could fight the Philistine because of his stature and age. David responded by sharing what he had done in the past (killing a lion and bear)
And the third time that David is criticized is from Goliath himself (v. 43). David counters this criticism by sharing the Truth that God will deliver him like He has in the past.
