Unbelievable to read that these people would actually create an idol to worship. After all that, you need a gold cow. Really. But even new testament believers can be this way. We all know that without faith, you can't please God. This is the crux of our relationship- faith. We believe in a god we can't see or touch and we hope for what we can't even grasp. It's easy to get frustrated in a relationship with someone invisible. I think many Christians begin to slip into rebellion when they become overwhelmed by the frustration of being faithless. They get impatient with God's timing- He doesn't move fast enough, He doesn't do what WE want. We can't hear Him. We can't see Him. We get desperate. So we turn to other things- idols. We make idols in our lives everyday because we're faithless. Sometimes, it's just laziness...can't hear God, unmotivated to live differently so we escape in tv, on the internet, into a relationship. We sort of numb out and things and people take up our time once devoted to Jesus. Sometimes we find other means to rationalize our behavior instead of seeking God's will for our situation and (gasp) changing our ways. It's interesting that the Israelites made an idol and then claimed to have a feast to the Lord. You can even idolize godly people. Instead of believing that the Holy Spirit can speak to us and guide us, we constantly go seek direction and affirmation from a tangible source- a person instead of seeking God. Is there anything wrong with seeking counsel- no way! Proverbs even says that in a multitude of counselors there is safety. But when we let those relationships take the place of us pursuing relationship with God, it's an idol. ANYTHING that takes the place of us having a direct relationship with God is idolatry. Guess we've all had some gold cows in our lives!
Oh, and side note, Aaron was a wuss.
