Distinguishing Between the Holy and the Common
This verse caught me off guard because I find many things I think of as "Holy" in the common world. But I think that is the point. While there are things in the common world that are Holy, the problem lies in when we can't see them anymore.
My wife is very sensitive to such things. The other night we were driving home in the dark on a country road when all of a sudden I almost hit this guy walking right next the road. He was wearing all black with hood over his head. I couldn't see him until I was right upon him. My first thought was, "What a crazy! He's going to get hit!". My wife's reaction was different. Her thoughts went further. She immediately said. "We better turn around and get that guy or he's going to die and I don't want to say I wish I would have stopped."
My wife was more concerned about the eternal consequences of our actions versus my mere human reaction of annoyance. Her sensitivity to "the Holy" things in this life is one of the reasons I married her.
May we be sensitive to "the Holy" things in our world. May our love for Christ be so ever present that we can all know the difference between "the Holy" and "the common"!
