There is more in this chapter than I can grasp, it is simply amazing. Every essential tenet of Christianity is here and yet we, in our minds and in our seminaries, have created denominational differences erected upon complex doctrinal statements that divide us.
From this presage we learn of the diety of Christ, in his pre-incarnate state.
It is a conversation that was, no doubt, initiated long before the world even existed. Indeed, we have the most frank and intimate conversation between the Father and the Son and theologians can't even explain it. How the unity of the Father, the Son, and truth revealed by the Spirit are interactive in bringing about the genesis of eternal life.
For those called to recognize the identity of Christ, these words will burn in your heart as you read them. You don't need a commentary or even these published notes to guide you. It is the Spirit revealing the truth in your heart. Do not rush reading this text, don't let time and space distract you from what is being said. Spoken in the past, these words transcend time a the Lord himself is praying for you as you read them.
It is because of this prayer that we have a Bible, the written word.
It is because of this payer that we have the testimony of the first trusted ones, the men who were the messengers. Passing on directly what the Father has revealed to the Son.
There is no secrecy in Christianity, no mysterious or hidden meaning about the person of Christ. It is all here in these verses. Grace and truth, revealed and displayed in the person of Jesus Christ.
While we may not know everything, what is recorded here is enough to plant a longing in or hearts to spend eternity with him and know the foolish error of living for this world only.
It is because if this message, the word made living, through the accurate transcription of the life of Christ into the minds and hearts of the disciples that we even know of this eternal life. Grasp it. Read it over again and again, mediate on why this conversation is even here.
