not against you is for you

Ok, so what about Luke 11:23 where Jesus says "whoever is not for me is against me"? Why do these verses seem to contradict each other? I guess it just means that people might not get in the way of your ministry but if they are not doing for Christ then they are against the Lord.... I guess, but then I am no scholar... Lord teach me your ways and grant me understanding of your will and wonders.
