Davids power and following continues to grow. He offers protection to this rich farmer (Nabal). When he kindly asks Nabal for a little help caring for his men. Nabal rudely responds and offers nothing. David is angry and prepares to avenge Nabal...killing every male in his family, but Nabals intelligent and beautiful wife pulls together supplies and meets David, begging for forgiveness. David has compassion on her and allows God to deal with Nabal, who dies soon after of "natural" causes, which makes Abigail (Nabal's wife) a widow. David then requests that Abigail become his wife and she does. This passage confirms God's control of all things. He is involved in our lives... and HE is just. We waste a lot of time seeking revenge or justice, when what we need to do is allow God to bring justice on those that go against him. I suppose it's possible that we could be the instrument of justice FOR God at some point, but we need to continue to pursue God so we could be absolutely certain of his leading us.
