day of atonement
I've often been struck by this ordinance that God instituted for the Israelites. It's incredibly rich and daunting. Can you imagine watching a goat run by your tent symbolizing one year's worth of your sins - and that of your friends and family? In the backdrop of this ceremony is the fact that if something doesn't work or someone drops the ball; then someone is going to die. Very daunting. I hate God and respect him all the same for laying down such strict ground rules. Among other things, it makes me wonder about God's holiness. Do I take my righteous status in Christ for granted? Have I totally marginalized the reality of personal holiness?
