To people in the 21st century, this all seems quite absurd.
All this blood thrown around. A little blood okay, but thrown everywhere?
You shall kill it on the north side of the altar, and the priests shall throw its blood on all four sides of the altar. (Leviticus 1:11 GNT)
The way they must kill a bird for the sacrifice...
The priest shall present it at the altar, wring its neck, and burn its head on the altar. Its blood shall be drained out against the side of the altar. (Leviticus 1:15 GNT)
Burning the head of the animal...
They shall put on the fire the pieces of the animal, including the head and the fat. (Leviticus 1:8 GNT)
Ohhh Lord. In this day and time it sounds especially strange. Did it sound as strange to the Israelites? Did they think, let's just bypass these details and kill the animal for the sacrifice? Well we know what happens when we give an offering that is not what God asks for.....
Abel also brought an offering, but from the firstborn animals of his herd, choice cuts of meat. God liked Abel and his offering, but Cain and his offering didn't get his approval.
GEN 4:4,5 MSG
We don't understand God-- that's for sure!
But what we do understand is there must be a penalty for sin. That penalty is death! And the blood that is shed, covers our sin, shed for that very purpose! I guess that's why they had to throw it all around, to make sure everything, every part, every sin was completely covered!
I'm SO thankful for our Savior! That He went to the extreme He did for us! We can't get THAT.... Its a mind boggler for sure, His amazing love...
And I'm so thankful He didn't bypass the details.
He did it right!
Completely! Once for all!
I may not get it all, but I appreciate it ALL!
