Prodigal God Notes - Tim Keller
Here is Jesus, who states he is God (in action and deed), is eating with "tax collectors and sinners".
When someone eats with someone you are making a statement. Typically of your approval or desire to want to spend time with those people. For instance, if I have a democrat over for dinner you will assume I am a democrat. If you see me having lunch with a republican, you will assume I am republican. The fact is , eating with someone takes extra effort.
In The context of this time period, eating with someone is not as easy as a sit down restaurant. Typically people needed to prep food, bake bread and it was an "event" in terms of having to "put something on".
So when God comes to earth and desires to spend time with "tax collectors and sinners", that gives the impression "God approves of these "tax collectors and sinners"". Then when Jesus doesnt spend the same quality time with the scribes and Pharisees, in effect Jesus is saying " I am God and I approve of the tax collectors and sinners and not those who know, teach and study my bible".
Think about this, when you move away and them "come home" who do you want to see? Those who are closest to you or those whom you don't care for?
This is how the scribes and Pharisees felt, betrayed or dissed by God himself.
