One son, single focus
This verse contains a clutter-freeing and focusing statement for Abraham. 'Take your son, your only son, whom you love' i think is God's way of getting Abraham to focus on the most important part of His grand plan: His true heir and bloodline which would one day bring us Jesus. Even before the act of sacrificing Isaac was setup, God needed Abraham to believe there was no potential backup plan which could include his other son. The true test of faith is not going into a calling with the attitude that if this plan doesn't work, there's always a plan B. There is no faith in that, merely limited human planning under the pretext of faithfulness.
When was the last time you sensed God's spirit calling you into something big and your initial thought is "Well, if it doesn't work out, i can always go back to what I've been doing"...
I know it only too well. That's why it's important to listen to God's voice before jumping into something. Make sure He's really calling you there. But if He is, go with abandon, without looking back, with no plan B. Let God supernaturally create your plan B for you, like this story shows with Isaac. And remember, God will never call you into personal sin as part of his plans.
Praise be to Jesus and the gift of the Holy Spirit who guides us into all truth.
