Present, past, future
Present: Pay attention, listen carefully; by implication: obey & adhere to.
Past: To what do we pay attention, & listen carefully? What must we obey & adhere to? The Gospel we have heard in the past by which we came to salvation (see v3).
Future: There is a danger of drifting away from the Gospel. New "revelations", exciting new teachings, promises of "spiritual growth" can lure us away from the Gospel; the writer of Hebrews warns against this danger, reminding us to keep the Gospel central in our belief system. The Gospel of God's undeserved grace, our salvation purchased fully & completely by the sacrificial death of Christ, our inability to add anything to Christ's perfect work is central to Christian doctrine; to drift away from it is to drift away from Christ.
