Taking Offense

Have you ever been betrayed, lost a loved one, or been an innocent victim? Many followers of Christ have experienced this kind of emotional trauma, which can result in questioning God. "Father, why has this happen to me?". In other words, Father I love you and try my best to live my life for you and this is what happens? I think this is similar to where John The Baptist was when he sent his followers to question Jesus, asking him if he is the expected one, or should he look for someone else? John had been put in prison (3:20) and had been there long enough to send some of his followers to question Jesus or as some might think, to remind Him that John was suffering in prison. John's question to Jesus might have ment: Are you the expected one? If so come get me out of prison. (after all I am family) If not let me know so I can look for someone else to get me out. At least this is what I think I would have been feeling. I think in Jesus' response "Blessed is he who does not take offense at Me."(7:23), addresses our self centered emotional response to God for allowing negative things to happen to us. After all, we are trying to live for Him, and look at what has happened.
Our focus shifts from Him to our circumstance, and at this point we take an offense against God. In spite of our feelings God remains faithful to us and has our lives in the palm of his hand. So step back and refocus on the big picture. Look for spiritual growth opportunities in the circumstances because God has a tremendous plan for our lives and has promised never to leave or forsake us (Heb. 13:5) No matter what you have experienced stay focused on Him and his call on your life. He Loves you so much, so do not be offended.
