Faith

Many times the life of trusting the Lord is a practice in patience. Waiting. But when deliverance comes, it is so sweet. I love the song "He Brought Me Out". What an awesome theme of deliverance! Verse 3 is so descriptive: "He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God."

I need to research this, but I think that pierced ears indicated that you were a servant. Which, if it's valid, makes verse 6 thought-provoking: "Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but my ears you have pierced." God doesn't want just the form and ritual, he wants a true follower, a loyal servant. David does follow it up with his claims of loyalty and devotion in vv. 7-10.

This psalm starts off so victoriously that it's a little disconcerting to read verses 11-17. My guess is that David was recounting a past victory to bolster his faith that God would work again.

"...the life of faith consists of living in the past and in the future. I live in the past in order to ground myself in what God has already done, as a way of gaining confidence in what he might do again." --Philip Yancey, Reaching for the Invisible God
