Establishing Jesus as Fulfillment of the Prophets

Matthew makes several references in this chapter, including this one, to the prophets and how Jesus is fulfilling each of the prophecies included in the Old Testament. He seems to be making a very distinct effort to point this out, so it must something his readers view as important.
