the road down to Jericho
I've driven this road a few times. Now it 's a highway that takes you down to Jericho. Even still, it's easy to see how treacherous this journey would have been. After you leave Jerusalem the wilderness begins immediately. It's a very, very steep ascent and scantly inhabited. Our little rental car was struggling on the way up. I imagine the 1st century trail wound it's way through the rock formations for around 30 miles. It would have been an ideal place to ambush someone, leaving a solo traveler truly vulnerable.
