What is the single greatest fear of humanity? Death? Weakness? Loneliness? Insanity? Those are the fears of many people. But do you notice something about them? They all have something in common. They all are unknowns. Death is a clear unknown. Weakness is only a fear because we don't know if that weakness will hinder us. Loneliness, will it ever end or will anyone love me? Insanity, will I still be me? The true fear of man is the unknown. Jesus knew that. He made us after all. He also knew how fear affects us. Fear can either hold you completely still or make you run faster then you thought possible. It is so beautiful how Jesus handles this deep and complex wound, this deep fear we all have of the unknown. Do you see it? He takes the fear the rulers used to control the people and uses it to turn them to God. You see the leaders controlled the people because they told them what would and wouldn't get them into heaven. First in verses 4 and 5 Jesus disarms the religious leaders and reminds them who has real authority... God. Then in verses 6 and 7 He tells them God cares and calms their fear. Then in 8 and 9 he removes the power that fear had over them. He does this by removing the unknown. He makes it simple and clear. He is the source of salvation. This is psychology in practice. First deal with what sustains the problem. Then deal with the emotion surrounding the problem. Then deal with the hold the problem has over the person. Jesus wasn't a trained counselor... He was and is the Prince of Peace and the great I Am. Jesus is too complex for any story and too perfect for any man.
