Living Altars
A rape, revenge - Jacob is troubled.
God steps in and tells him to "...go up to Bethel and dwell there; and make an altar there to God..."
In Hebrew, Bethel means "house of God" and altar means "a place of slaughter and sacrifice."
In other words, God sees Jacob is troubled and says to him, "Go to the house of God and live there and offer up a sacrifice."
1 Peter 2:5 tells us that we are like "living stones" being build up into a "spiritual house" and Hebrews 13:15 instructs us to "continually offer up a sacrifice of praise".
When things in life go crazy, we need to be reminded that through Jesus, we are being built into altars of praise to God.
Lord God, reveal to us what great sacrifice you made for us through your son Jesus and let us respond in total gratitude that goes beyond the cares of this world.
