2 Sam 4-6 - David made king over all of Israel
David takes the throne of Israel after Saul dies. The people respect him and desire for him to be their king. 5:12 - The people KNEW that the Lord had established him as king... for the sake of his people. Shortly after taking the throne, David defeats the Philistines. Then to honor the Lord, he desires to bring the Ark of God back to Jerusalem. There is some trouble along the way. Uzzah touches the Ark and the Lord strikes him down for disrespect. This makes me question our contemporary view of God. Certainly God is sovereign, loving, a God of grace and mercy, powerful, all-knowing... but I think we tend to make God out to be this "buddy down the street". Many times we have an irreverent view of God. We are to FEAR him. We are to respect him. We are to bow before him. We are to rid ourselves of sin. We are not to come into his presence casually. We are now under the new covenant and under the grace of Christ, but we must remember always to approach God, through Christ, with a spirit of humility, awe, respect, and reverence. And in V.22... we can even approach God in a way that the world might call "undignified". David could have cared less what anyone thought of him. He was laying it all on the line to worship God. His focus was on God alone and not on what anyone thought.... and he was the king of Israel. Willing to make a "fool" of him self to give God all he had. Now that's worship!
