Even Believers Need Miracles
"But the boat was already a long distance from the land, battered by the waves; for the wind was contrary. And in the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea." (Matthew 14:24, 25 NASB)
As I read this so-familiar passage once again, it struck me that here is a miracle that is set apart from his others. Usually, when Jesus performs a miracle, it is to help those who are sick, hurting and in need. It seems that Jesus usually performs miracles so that those who do not know him may believe and ultimately glory will be brought to God.
But here in the boat, that was not the case. The only people present were those who already knew Jesus. They had seen him use his power and authority repeatedly. It was not as if Jesus was going to convince some mass of people to believe in him as he just had the night prior with the feeding of the 5000.
No, instead, in the darkest part of the night, with a raging storm that would have reduced visibility to nothing, Jesus comes and performs a miracle just for the 12 apostles. It was a miracle that was meant for those who already believed in him and his power. It was meant for people like you and I...
Father God, remember us. When our faith wavers and we begin to doubt due to the stormsof life, come to us. Reveal your power and authority in our lives. Give us strength to worship you in the midst of life's difficulties and to understand that above all else, regardless of our current circumstances, you are the Son of God and worthy of our faith, our love and our trust.
