Burying his father

The disciple's father is not dead, as in "the funeral is today, let me go to that and then I'll come with you". What is being referred to here should be viewed from Jewish custom. It is likely this disciple is the first-born son, and the responsibility of taking over his father's household falls on him. He is telling Jesus, "After my father dies (whenever that may be) and I put all of those affairs in order, then I will follow you." Jesus goes against custom (a common occurrence!) and tells the man to leave his father and follow his calling.
